Kumata Studio from Indonesia bets big on 2D content

PT. Kumata Indonesia (better known as Kumata Animation Studio) was established in 2006 and is an animation studio with a mission to create and produce original works emphasising high-quality content that entertains users through a variety of media platforms. All this is possible because Kumata Studio has eight years of experience in the creative industry with a professional staff of experts in the field of animation production.

Speaking to AnimationXpress.com, Kumata Animation Studio founder and CEO Daryl Wilson says: “We believe and have experienced that the telling of great stories combined with professional execution provides an unforgettable experience for the user.”

The studio specialises in 2D animation and has developed IPs for teens, pre-schools and educational content along with adult web series content in the recent past. The studio is currently looking for partners from around the globe for licensing deals and broadcast partners for some of its IPs.

“Our content is majorly for the teenage audience, so we specifically want to approach channels such as Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon or Disney for our IPs, but anyone else who is looking for a comedy adventure for children ranging between 8 and 12 years old is also welcome to partner with us,” Daryl reveals.

The studio is equipped to handle everything from scratch, be it the character design, storyboarding or scripting. “The idea is tell people that in Indonesia we are capable of creating content of global standards,” he stresses.

The studio uses ToonBoom Harmony and Flash for creating its animation and is capable of delivering hand drawn digital traditional animation frame by frame as well if required.

There are 10-12 animators, five background artists, two scriptwriters, two visual designers, two storyboard artists and a sound artist, with the total strength of the team being close to 25 members.

Sharing his insights on how different is creating for Asia than other countries, Daryl expounds: “The approach to content is very different in Asia as we need to keep in mind a lot of cultural aspects. Whereas abroad there is more focus on good v/s evil and other such aspects for shows, catering to a much larger and universal audience.”

The animation studio is also helping Maya Digital Studios for some of its new IPs with storyboarding. And what would the future for 2D animation look like, he says, “I believe The Simpsons is testament to the fact that 2D animation can also flourish on the big screen. But at the end of the day, if you have a good story and strong characters that connect with the audience; the style of animation won’t really matter,” he ends.
