Oscar-winning VFX supervisor Tim McGovern is no more. While he was most renowned for his work on Total Recall for which he won an Academy Award, friends and colleagues remember McGovern for his generosity, enthusiasm, optimism and supportive nature.
McGovern, who passed away on 30 March 2024 in Mumbai at the age of 68, has to his credit films like Tron, Speed, Ghost and the Darkness, Equilibrium, Dunkirk and Oscar-winning First Man. His wife Reena NeGandhi took to Facebook to announce the news of his demise and express her grief. She shared that McGovern had written a film and novel which now she would have to take over. “He had so many life dreams for his film and now he’s gone. He’s left it in my hands to make it happen now. I have no idea how I will live without him. He took such good care of me and he was my world,” she said in the post.
McGovern’s funeral was held on Monday, 1 April in Mumbai. The ceremony was attended by his close friends and the VFX fraternity. A founding member of the VES (Visual Effects Society), he resided in Mumbai since the past several years and worked in the DNEG branch of the city.

He immensely contributed to the growth of India VFX industry by developing VFX communities in several cities, pushing for VES expansion in India and working with the Indian artists. He later decided to move and work from India, which helped the Indian VFX learn from the master.
