Sony declares 18.5 million units of PS4 sold worldwide

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. announced that the PlayStation4 or PS4 computer entertainment system has cumulatively sold through more than 18.5 million units worldwide as of January 4, 2015, and that the holiday season retail sales exceeded 4.1 million units globally.

Sony chief Kazuo Hirai announced the news during a press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show at Las Vegas on Monday.

“PlayStation 4 sold 4.1 million units during this Holiday season, and the total sell-through has now reached more than 18.5 million units since its launch. I’m liking those numbers! I’d say, this is a remarkable success for this next generation console, and, actually, this is exceeding the rate of adoption of any other PlayStation Platform,” exclaimed Kazuo.

The PS4 console has been a bright spot for the struggling firm, which launched a sweeping restructuring in a bid to claw its way back to profitability.

The release of the PS4 in the United States and other markets has helped improve Sony’s fortunes after a disappointing response to the console’s predecessor, the PS3

The numbers have come up only after one year in the sale of the console whereas Nintendo Wii U, which was launched in 2012, took more than a year to sell six million units. Microsoft too is not far behind in the fight for the pole position after it overtook Sony’s consistent dominance whole throughout the year in the month of November last year.

The PlayStation 4 is selling significantly faster than its predecessor. The PlayStation 3 took almost two years to reach the same sales milestone.
