Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom set to unleash chaos in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

The man who once helped save the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is now set to threaten it. Robert Downey Jr is returning to the MCU, but he has traded Iron Man’s armour for Doctor Doom’s sinister mask in Avengers: Doomsday. The film opens in India on 17 December 2026, a day before its US release, in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

The casting has raised one big question: who exactly is Doctor Doom? The trailers and posters have offered glimpses of Marvel’s formidable supervillain, but his history stretches back decades in the comics.

Doctor Doom, whose real name is Victor von Doom, first appeared in Marvel Comics’ The Fantastic Four #5. His story is closely tied to Reed Richards, also known as Mr Fantastic. The two were college classmates, intellectual rivals and anything but friends.

In the comics, one of Doom’s experiments goes wrong, and he blames Richards for the failure. Their already competitive relationship turns bitter, setting the stage for a long-running rivalry that has become central to Doom’s story.

How the Russo brothers will bring this complicated relationship to the screen remains under wraps. But Pedro Pascal, who plays Reed Richards, has offered a glimpse into the dynamic.

Speaking at Comic-Con earlier this year, Pascal said, “Intellectuals understand that we’re all responsible for ourselves,” while discussing Reed’s attitude towards Doom.

“The world that we’re in, and the way that I understand it through Reed, at least, is very singular to the relationship that I have to Doom. And I guess there is a big barrier between the context that we all have as audience members to the experience of Avengers, and the incredible way that all of it is threaded together as we have X-Men sitting with us in this group,” he added.

Marvel’s comics give Doom a formidable arsenal. His abilities include magic, superhuman strength and exceptional intelligence, making him a threat who can challenge heroes on more than one front. The Russo brothers, however, have kept details of his powers in Avengers: Doomsday under wraps.

The casting reportedly came from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. In an interview last year, Joe Russo revealed that Feige was the driving force behind bringing Downey Jr back as Doctor Doom. The actor, in turn, helped persuade the Russo brothers to return to the franchise and direct Avengers: Doomsday.

Downey Jr’s return marks a striking change of sides: from the hero who launched the MCU’s defining era to one of its most formidable villains. Whether Doom’s arrival spells the end of the Avengers as audiences know them is a question the film will answer when it lands in December.

Avengers: Doomsday releases in Indian theatres on 17 December 2026, in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. The film will also be presented in Infinity Vision, a Premium Large Format (PLF) theater certification program and other premium formats.
