Marvel appoints ‘Harley Quinn’ storyboard artist Liza Singer for upcoming new series

Liza Singer, a storyboard artist for DC’s animated Harley Quinn series, announced that she will be working with Marvel Studios as a director for a new series, which is an upcoming mystery project.

The talented lady has previously worked on animated projects for Warner Bros., Netflix, Titmouse among many others. Singer revealed on her social media handle that she has signed on to Marvel Studios to direct an unannounced upcoming series. Singer broke the news on Twitter and shared what they knew about the mysterious new project along with a picture of the Marvel Studios logo. The post did not identify the property the team wants to work with, but they expressed enthusiasm for the new role and said, “I’m so excited to share that I’m starting a new journey today as a director at Marvel Studios! It’s going to be a great and especially team, and I just feel incredibly excited.”

In the year 2017, Singer developed storyboards for the then upcoming first season of DCs Harley Quinn, an animated cartoon adaptation that explores the Batman mythos with Harley Quinn at the forefront of history. The series, which has been running for two seasons with the third season coming soon, earned critical acclaim and huge popularity in no way because of its animation and art style.

Singer was also a storyboard revisionist on another DC project, DC Superhero Girls, and they have produced storyboards for every season of Netflix’s fantasy-comedy series Disenchantment. They have most recently delved into directing, spending late 2020 directing an animated series for Titmouse and early 2021 as a supervising director for an animated short at RoosterTeeth. In addition, they have experience in freelance animating, illustrating and writing for various media.

The storyboard artist’s background may give rise to speculation that she could be working on the next season of Marvel’s What If…?, which Marvel began developing as far back as 2019. However, her website specifies the project is a “new” series still under NDA, implying that their upcoming project is a property that has yet to be announced to the public.

The ongoing success of What If…?, the animated Disney+ series that explores alternate versions of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has verified fans are eager to see more animated storytelling from Marvel Studios. Executives at Marvel recently revealed they are expanding their animation branch by launching a new “mini studio” to produce more animated fare. Apart from Singer, Marvel previously recruited Sofia Alexander, creator of the anime-inspired fantasy series Onyx Equinox.
