‘Lego One Piece’ animated special brings seasons one and two to Netflix in September

The straw hats are setting sail once again, but this time, they are made of Lego bricks. Netflix is set to debut a two-part Lego One Piece animated special in September.

The special will retell key events from the first two seasons of the live-action One Piece, following Usopp as he recounts the straw hats’ adventures to the crew’s newest member, Tong Tong Chopper. The story will revisit their journey from the East Blue to the Grand Line, including their encounters with the Arlong Pirates, Baroque works assassins and other formidable foes.

One Piece showrunner, writer, and executive producer Tom Hyndman chose Usopp as the narrator because of his larger-than-life storytelling personality. Through his perspective, the special aims to introduce new viewers to the world of One Piece while offering longtime fans a fresh take on familiar stories.

“We wanted to make something that would ease new viewers into the massive world of One Piece while also giving longtime fans a new, fun perspective to see the iconic stories of the first two seasons,” said Hyndman.

The Lego format brings a playful twist to the Straw Hats’ adventures, transforming characters, location and action sequences from the live-action series into a brick- built world. The live-action straw hat crew will return to voice their Lego counterparts. Iñaki Godoy will voice Monkey D. Luffy, Emily Rudd will voice Nami, Mackenyu will voice Zoro, Jacob Romero will voice Usopp, Taz Skylar will voice Sanji, and Mikaela Hooever will voice Tony Tony Chopper.

According to Hyndman, having the original cast involved gave the team greater freedom during the recording sessions, allowing the actors to bring their understanding of the characters to the performances. The sessions also resulted in improved moments that added to the special’s comedic tone.

The project is produced in partnership with the Lego group, Japanese publisher Shueisha and Vancouver-based animation studio Atomic Cartoons, known for Marvel’s Spidey and His Friends.

Chelsea Ker is the director of both episodes. One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda also serves as an executive producer, alongside Jill Wilfert, Keith Malone and Lars Danielsen for Lego, Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements for Tomorrow Studio.

Fans can also bring the adventure home with Lego sets inspired by the live-action One Piece series. The upcoming special combines Lego’s playful style with the world of One Piece, giving fans a new way to revisit the straw hats’ early adventures.

The two-part Lego One Piece animated special will premiere on Netflix on 29 September 2026.
