Internet Archive revives the old playable MS-DOS games for free

Kids of the 1990s can feel the nostalgia of playing old games right from their browsers. Internet.org has released close to 2,400 games to its steadily growing collection of classic software, including games like Prince, SkyRoads and Doom 2.

Thanks to Jason Scott’s EM-DosBox a new browser based emulator; the games can be played on the browser itself without the need to download. The emulator still being in the beta mode, there are some issues you might run into while you are trying to play your favourite game.

Scott in his blog post wrote: “I really worked hard to have only fully-functioning programs up, or at least, programs that gave viable, useful feedback. Some of them will still fall over and die, and many of them might be weird to play in a browser window, and of course you can’t really save things off for later, and that will limit things too. But on the whole, you will experience some analogue of the MS-DOS program, in your browser, instantly.”

As with past releases from the Archive, there are no instructions for how to play each game, so you’ll need to do a bit of experimenting with the keys and work your way around.

Internet Archive also made nearly 900 classic, coin-operated arcade games accessible in its collection late last year, also free and in-browser.
