Walt Disney is finally launching Disney+ in India through Hotstar tomorrow, 3 April.
Hotstar has a very strong presence in the Indian OTT landscape with over 300 million MAUs (Monthly Active Users) and wide content library of daily soaps, Bollywood blockbusters and Hotstar Specials.
With the launch of Disney+ in India, Hotstar has revised its subscription plans, increasing its annual subscription price to Rs. 1,499 in comparison to Rs. 999 earlier. With this, Disney+Hotstar will become the second most expensive OTT player in India after global streaming platform, Netflix.
Disney+ comes with content bundled from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic. Besides films and TV shows, it offers original shows like space western The Mandalorian that is set in the Star Wars universe, documentary series, The World According to Jeff Goldblum, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, among others.
Disney+ is entering India at an opportune time. With the COVID-19 lockdown across the country, online video consumption has surged as people stay indoors.
As a prelude to the launch, Disney+Hotstar will host India’s largest virtual red carpet event, today, 2 April with the premiere of The Lion King (in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu) at 6 pm followed by the popular Disney+ original The Mandalorian at 8 pm.
