Anime India Mumbai 2026, an initiative by AnimationXpress, concluded on 30 August at NESCO Exhibition Centre, Goregaon, Mumbai, marking a year of its nationwide journey. The event turned the city into a vibrant hub of anime and Japanese pop culture, bringing together fans, creators, artists, performers, gamers, cosplayers and industry professionals under one roof.
The Mumbai edition followed successful Anime India events in Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata, further strengthening the platform’s presence across the country and reflecting the growing scale, diversity and enthusiasm of India’s anime community. Across three days, fans were treated to an extensive line-up of programming, experiences and competitions designed to bring the world of anime closer to Indian audiences.
Among the highlights were the Closet Cosplay segment, Grand Cosplay Competition and Naruto Cosplay Competition, each offering a different stage for fans to showcase their craftsmanship, creativity, cultural influences and performance skills.
Creativity on a budget
The Closet Cosplay segment proved that great cosplay does not necessarily come with a great price tag. The competition challenged participants to create their costumes within a limited budget, encouraging them to experiment with thrifted clothing, repurposed household items and improvised materials. From wigs fashioned out of wool and fabric to inventive costume hacks, the segment put resourcefulness firmly in the spotlight.
Judging focused on budget adherence (30 per cent), accuracy (30 per cent), and craftsmanship and novelty (40 per cent), rewarding participants who could stretch their creativity without stretching their wallets.
Craft, character and confidence
The Grand Cosplay Competition put the spotlight firmly on the art and discipline behind cosplay. Participants were judged primarily on crafting (50 per cent), fit and mobility (30 per cent), and disposition (20 per cent), making it as much about bringing a character to life as it was about constructing an impressive costume.
And then came the competition that was always going to hit a special nerve with the fandom.
Naruto fandom goes full shinobi
Headlining the guest list was Hayato Date, director of Naruto and Naruto Shippuden. For a generation that grew up watching Naruto Uzumaki dream of becoming Hokage, Date is far more than a name on a panel. His work helped shape one of the most recognisable anime franchises and, for many Indian fans, a gateway into anime itself.
Naturally, the Naruto Cosplay Competition was a celebration of that fandom, colourful, chaotic, fiercely committed and unmistakably shinobi.
From painstakingly crafted costumes to expressive performances and character-perfect details, cosplayers brought some of anime’s most beloved personalities to life, turning the convention floor into a moving, breathing celebration of fandom.
Here are some more glimpses of the incredible cosplay artists who brought their favourite characters to life at Anime India Mumbai 2026.
