Streaming behemoth Netflix has axed Daredevil after only three seasons, the third of Marvel TV series to be cancelled in less than two months.
With Iron Fist and Luke Cage already canned in October, Netflix’s decision to next end one of Marvel’s most successful shows has left the fans enraged. In an official statement, it said: “We are tremendously proud of the show’s last and final season and although it’s painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note.
“We’re thankful to showrunner Erik Oleson, the show’s writers, stellar crew and incredible cast including Charlie Cox as Daredevil himself, and we’re grateful to the fans who have supported the show over the years.”
Daredevil premiered its third season on the platform on 19 October to raving reviews and a fourth one was supposedly to be announced soon. But seems like we’ve already seen the last of the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen.
Marvel released an official statement on its website thanking the fans and the stars but also hinting at the continuation of the sage in some way: “Marvel is extremely grateful to the huge audience that loved Marvel’s Daredevil. From the moment of young Matt’s first act of heroism to the birth of Page, Murdock, and Nelson, it has been a unbelievable journey.
“We are incredibly proud of the amazing showrunners and writers starting with Drew Goddard and Steven DeKnight, Marco Ramirez and Doug Petrie and Erik Oleson, Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Vincent D’Onofrio and our casts who brought our characters to life with such excellence, and every one of the fantastic crews in NYC. We look forward to more adventures with the Man without Fear in the future.”
That last line of the statement has set the Daredevil aficionados speculating at a possible new season on Disney’s upcoming streaming service, and although nothing’s been confirmed yet, it hints at more adventures of the attorney-cum-vigilante. However, latest reports emerging from the international media also suggest a possible reboot of all three franchises cancelled by Netflix.
Marvel’s Jessica Jones and The Punisher are the only series now remaining from the Netflix-Marvel collaboration as both are currently in production for new season. But there’s a palpable premonition amongst the Marvel fandom that at this rate, those two may end too.
