Respawn to pull plug on EA’s ‘Apex Legends Mobile’, ‘Battlefield Mobile’ and its Industrial Toys game studio

The popular battle royale shooter Apex Legends Mobile from EA and Respawn is not going to survive this planet. Eight months after the game’s debut, EA announced that the free-to-play game will close on 1 May 2023. Additionally, EA intends to discontinue Battlefield Mobile as well, and as a result, it is shutting down its Industrial Toys game studio, according to Kotaku and VentureBeat.

In February 2019, the multiplayer-only Titanfall spin-off Apex Legends was unexpectedly released on consoles and the PC. It swiftly gained popularity as a battle royale game. A mobile version of the shooter was teased by EA and Respawn a few years later and was eventually released in May of last year for iOS and Android.

Apex Legends Mobile was named Google Play’s and Apple’s Game of the Year for 2022. It is shocking that the game will now end after 90 days. Battlefield Mobile will likewise terminate after its soft launch. Respawn Entertainment explained the decision to discontinue Apex Legends Mobile in a blog post by pointing to the game’s deteriorating update quality. EA made the declaration when announcing its financial results for the third fiscal quarter that ended on 31 December.

β€œAt Respawn, we aim to provide players with games that are consistently outstanding. Following a strong start, the content pipeline for Apex Legends Mobile has begun to fall short of that bar for quality, quantity and cadence. It is for this reason, after months of working with our development partner, that we have made the mutual decision to sunset our mobile game. Although disappointing, we are proud of the game we launched, are grateful for the support of the Apex Legends community and are confident that this is the right decision for players,” the blog post said.

Today, Respawn is also deactivating the in-game real-money shop on Mobile and taking Apex Legends Mobile off the digital store shelves. The following 90 days will see the game in its entirety. Refunds for in-game purchases made during the game’s eight-month lifespan won’t be refunded by EA or Respawn.

Respawn claims that the choice to discontinue support for the mobile version of the game is unique to that platform and is “separate” from the supposedly more well-liked console and PC versions of Apex Legends.
