Nintendo to make production comeback with ‘Super Mario Bros.’ animated film

After the infamous 1993 live-action Super Mario Bros. movie, Nintendo essentially withdrew from Hollywood. Now, the video game corporation is making a comeback. During a Nintendo Direct presentation, the first trailer for the animated Super Mario Bros. movie was released to much fanfare.

Chris Pratt voices Mario along with Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike in the animated film.

For the movie, Nintendo collaborates with Illumination, the animation studio famous for Minions. Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo and Illumination’s Chris Meledandri collaborate on production. Matthew Fogel has written the script for Mario and the director-duo of Teen Titans Go! To the Movies have directed the film.

Universal studio will distribute the animated Super Mario Bros. globally and it will premiere on 7 April 2023.
