Japan’s Toei Animation is producing Dragon Ball Daima which is based on an original story by its late creator Akira Toriyama and will be available to stream on the anime streaming service Crunchyroll.
The series will launch on the original manga’s 40th anniversary on 11 October 2024 and will be available to stream in the United States, Canada, Latin America including Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India and Southeast Asia on the streaming service. The series will follow a weekly release schedule of subtitled episodes with the Japanese TV broadcast.
Dragon Ball Daima was revealed during October 2024 at the Dragon Ball Special Panel during New York Comic Con 2023.
The creator of the original Dragon Ball manga, Toriyama, died on 1 March 2024. The original manga by Toriyama was featured in Japanese manga publishing company Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. The Japanese manga artist has penned over 519 chapters in the original manga run from 1984 to 1995. Toriyama created various character designs for the Dragon Quest video game series, which is directly inspired by the Dragon Ball franchise. He was also involved in creating character design for the franchise’s own video games.
The official synopsis of Dragon Ball Daima reads: Due to a conspiracy, Goku and his friends are turned small. What sort of adventure awaits Goku, Supreme Kai, and the new characters Glorio and Panzy in this unknown world, the “Demon Realm”?
The series is directed by Yoshitaka Yashima (key animator, Dragon Ball Z: Cooler’s Revenge) and Aya Komaki (series director, One Piece) together with series composition and scenario by Yuko Kakihara and animation character design by Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru.
The series features the opening theme song Jaka Jaan composed by Grammy Award-winning EDM artist Zedd with support from C&K, the singer-songwriting duo of Clievy and Keen, who also provided vocals. The lyrics for the series’ theme are written by Yukinojo Mori, best known for the Dragon Ball franchise songs Cha-La Head-Cha-La and Limit Break x Survivor. Zedd will also be producing the ending song Nakama for the show.
With the addition of Dragon Ball Daima, the franchise now spans six episodic series, including Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, Dragon Ball Z Kai, and Dragon Ball Super, and 21 feature films as well as numerous mobile and video games, a trading card game and an ever-expanding catalogue of licensed merchandise and location-based entertainment.
Toei Animation is an LA based studio and has worked on franchises like Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, One Piece, Digimon, Saint Seiya and many others.The company has distributed these franchises to various regions like North America, Latin America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Toei Animation’s Los Angeles office also oversees all categories of consumer product licensing based on its film and television brands within these territories.
