After a series of fake titles being dropped by cast members across social media, the official title for Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 has officially been revealed and it is called Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Tom Holland, Zendaya and other cast members trolled fans with titles Home-Wrecker, Phone Home and Home Slice earlier in the week. However, on 24 February 2021, the official title of the third Marvel-Sony Spider-Man movie was confirmed.
The title was announced via a Twitter video explaining why cast members Tom Holland, Jacob Batalon and Zendaya had revealed three different titles the day beforehand: Spider-Man: Phone Home, Spider-Man: Home-Wrecker and Spider-Man: Home Slice. And since the notorious spoiler breaker Holland can’t be trusted to deliver the news himself, the studios dropped the reveal on the movie’s various social media channels.
Tom Holland will star in the Spider-Man: No Way Home. It’s a foreboding phrase that meshes well with the chaos that Far From Home introduced into Peter Parker’s world following Mysterio’s final gambit in the movie’s third act, and the strange new status quo established in the wake of Avengers: Endgame.
The title makes sense since Far From Home ended with Spider-Man’s identity being leaked to the public by Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio. The Marvel villain also accused Peter of murdering him. So in the third movie, Peter must be in exile, as he cannot live freely.
Spider-Man: No Way Home brings together several characters not just from the MCU, but also from previous Spider-Man franchises. It has been revealed that Jamie Foxx will appear as Electro and Alfred Molina will play Doctor Octopus, and though the precise story details aren’t known, it’s widely assumed they’re reprising the versions of the characters they played in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 2 respectively. Benedict Cumberbatch will take the role of mentor to Holland’s Peter Parker, replacing Tony Stark.
The film has been in production in Atlanta since late 2020 and is continuing to shoot, serving as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first story to be a follow up to the tale unfolding on WandaVision. The reveal came as Holland’s Cherry is gearing up for release and the actor has been prompted to talk about the Marvel film during his press rounds.
Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment’s collaboration on the web-slinging hero has come a long way since it first started in 2015. Tom Holland was seen debuting as Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War and since then, he’s appeared in a Marvel Cinematic Universe film every year. That includes two solo movies, as well as two Avengers projects.
Tom Holland said, “The film is incredibly ambitious, and I’m delighted to say that we’re succeeding in making it. It’s going really well. We watched a fight scene that we had shot a few weeks ago, and I’ve never seen a fight scene quite like it in the MCU. I’m really excited for audiences to see that.”
The film is expected to dive into a multiverse story, as it will feature Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange and is tied to the impending conclusion of the WandaVision series, similarly to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Spider-Man 3 is currently set to be released in December 2021.
