Mumbai based FX School recently delivered over 400 VFX shots for RVG’s latest film “Department” released on 18th May 2012. The entire VFX of the film as well as the cinematography and editing was done by FX School Students & ex-students who form FXS. the School’s production services division.
Department is a Hindi action film directed by Ram Gopal Varma with well known stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt and Rana Daggubati in lead roles. The entire movie was shot primarily using several Canon EOS Digital Still Cameras shooting in Hi Defination. The film includes a large number of VFX shots using techniques like rig removal, wire removal, green/blue screen shot, compositing CG elements and day for night conversion.
Speaking to Animationxpress.com, about the challenges faced during the project C B Arun Kumar, Academic Director said that, “The most challenging part of the movie was that RGV has adopted a “rogue” style of film making that demands the cameras to be mostly handheld. This obviously made it very difficult four our FX team, since every shot required a lot of precise tracking and match moving. But as we have worked with RGV previously on many of his projects which had a good scope of work and we delivered these projects efficiently and on time and without compromising on the quality. RGV had complete faith in us and had no doubts in his mind when approaching us for the VFX work in
Department.”
All the VFX work on the film was completed within a period of 45 days.
The VFX team comprised of two experienced supervisors, Mazdiar Santoke and Yohan Wadia, who also happen to be senior VFX Trainers at FX School, two lead artists, Jishnu P Dev and Karan Kapoor, three senior compositors: Neville Mehta, Prasad Kadam and Siddhesh Ware along with five junior compositors Divyesh Solanki, Justin Fernandes, Ruta Malani, Ninad Joshi and Gaurang Modi.
FX School presently has bagged many more projects which are VFX intensive due to the successful execution of “Department” and they hoping to spin their success into a full-fledged VFX services facility.
