Unstoppable Domains, a Web3 domain name provider and user-owned digital identity platform, and Kintsugi Global, a Japan-based provider of Web3 services and solutions, have announced their plans to register for the first DNS-enabled Web3 domains focused on anime and manga through an application with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
This application targets a legacy Generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD), a crucial step for securing widely recognised domain extensions such as .com and .net. It revolves around the .anime and .manga Web3 domains introduced by Kintsugi and Unstoppable last year alongside the animedomains.com digital marketplace. The submission is timed to align with ICANN’s anticipated six-year registration program scheduled for next year. Kintsugi Global has now become a supporter of the Vision for a Digital Garden City Nation (“DigiDen”) promoted by the Japanese Government.
As part of the initiative, Kintsugi will launch an anime and manga platform that will enable blockchain-based content distribution and provide creators control over their intellectual property while fostering Web3 communities and fan engagement through digital collectibles.
“Our pursuit of the .anime and .manga Web3 domains through this ICANN application represents Kintsugi’s commitment to empowering creators, cultivating global fan communities, and uniting the worldwide anime and manga cultures under distinctive digital identities they can proudly claim,” said Kintsugi CEO Ron Scovil.
If the application is successful, the .anime and .manga domains will join the ranks of ICANN-registered top-level domains like .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, and more. Their introduction will enhance digital branding strategies and provide distinct online identities tailored specifically to the anime and manga communities.
“Through our joining application with Kintsugi, we aim to open up new opportunities for digital identities centred around the anime and manga communities,” commented Unstoppable Domains COO Sandy Carter. “If approved, these domains will provide invaluable digital real estate, enhancing the branding potential of creators and fan engagement.”
The registration is part of Unstoppable Domain’s strategy to integrate Web3 domains into the legacy Domain Name System by registering their Web2 equivalents, or twins, with ICANN. Initially focused on a curated selection of Web3 domains, Unstoppable plans to expand its offerings, offering companies an integrated naming solution at a reduced cost ahead of the next ICANN round.
