Movies based on games have gained much popularity in the recent time, from Warcraft to the yet-to-be-released Assassin’s Creed and even Gears of War. While not many movies from this genre managed to achieve any incredible feat, the numbers are surely increasing.
Now, it will be time for eSports. The mode of electronic sports has garnered much attention from enthusiasts around the globe, even in India. With sponsors pouring in from various sectors, the industry is predicted to boom in the coming years.
Legendary Pictures has just announced that Will Ferrel will be starring in their upcoming, yet untitled, eSports movie where he plays the role of player in an eSports team and is an “an anomaly in a sport where players usually retire in their 20s due to slowing hand-eye coordination,” Legendary said in a statement. Ferrel has earlier portrayed the role of the unusual athlete in movies like, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Semi-Pro and Blades of Glory.
The Zoolander 2 star will also likely be working with real-life eSports players from teams ‘Evil Geniuses’ and ‘Fnatic’, who are in talks of playing cameos in the movie.
It has not yet been revealed that which game the star would be playing in the movie, but the mentions of Dota 2 and League of Legends in the press release can leave us with some speculations.
The eSports comedy movie will be penned by Michael Kvamme and Jordan Dunn, who have worked on ‘SpongeBob SquarePants 3’, which is slated for a 2019 release.
