The ongoing rumor and speculations about a sequel of ‘Green Lantern’ movie which was released in 2011 has finally come to a rest. As opposed to the earlier prediction, the movie won’t be a solo outing, it will be focusing on the intergalactic force which defends the universe from any possible danger and is named as “Green Lantern Corps”. Warner Bros flashed The DC Universe’s slate which revealed the movie’s title on the screen during the Comic Con event being held at San Diego.
Green Lantern is an intergalactic police officer and a superhero who first appeared in All-American Comics #16 in 1940. The green character was created by a graphic artist Martin Nodell and is one of the many characters produced by the DC Comics, Inc. The original Green Lantern, Alan Scott was one of the members of the Justice League but wasn’t a part of the Green Lantern Corps. The death of the alien, Abin Sur who was one of the founding member of Justice League of America led to Hal Jordon becoming the first human to be a part of the Green Lantern Corps. Hal Jordon, a reckless test pilot, was chosen by the Green Lantern, Abin Sur’s emerald power ring because of his determination and strong will power. The ring is a weapon which fueled by willpower allows the wearer to construct anything which is made of pure energy using just his imagination and creativity. The only way to master the ring’s powers is by confronting and overcoming the fears of their mind.
Directed by Martin Campbell, the Green Lantern movie was released in June, 2011 and the story revolves around the character Hal Jordon. Unlike the coming Green Lantern Corps movie, the Green Lantern was a solo movie. The lead was played by Ryan Reynolds and he has been appreciated by the critics and audiences for his physique and great efforts put in for the role. Other than that the movie received negative reviews from the critics and a mixed response from the audience. The movie had several loopholes and the script and direction of the film seemed to have left the audience to their own imagination. The visual and animation effects were acclaimed, though there were parts which could have been improved. With a budget of $200 million, the high-hoped film generated a not so surprising low revenue (owing to the critics) of approximately $220 million.
Owing to the bad revenues and negative reviews, Warner Bros had decided to cancel its planned sequel but in 2013, the concept of DC’s shared universe films came into picture with Man of Steel being the first movie under it. With that the speculation of return of the Green Lantern’s sequel came into picture. Words are that the lead character, Hal Jordon will be mostly played by the Star Trek actor, Chris Pine or by Tyrese Gibson who was lately seen in Fast and Furious 7. We could expect to see one of the Green Lanterns to be in the cast of the upcoming Justice League’s two part film which is set to release in 2017 and 2019 respectively. Green Lantern Corps is planned to get released on 2020.
