Virtual reality game developer Playful raises $25 Million

Playful Corp., a virtual reality gaming start-up has raised $25 million in a new funding round from a number of private investors. Including the new round, Playful has raised $33 million to-date.

Founded in 2013 by Words with Friends developers, Playful has its primary aim to develop games for the Facebook owned Oculus Rift. The company plans to use the new round to accelerate the development of original IP for cutting edge platforms.

The studio is currently working on Steam Early Access sandbox adventure game Creativerse and is also developing virtual reality title Lucky’s Take, which will launch on the Oculus Rift next year, one of the first major releases for the platform.

“We’re inspired by Snow White, by Toy Story, by Mario,” Playful CEO and founder Paul Bettner said in a statement. “These beloved stories and characters share something in common: technology made them possible. Motion pictures, CG characters, interactive video games — these advances enabled fundamentally new levels of empathy and audience connection. We founded Playful to carry on this tradition.”

Virtual Reality has been an exciting sector to invest and a lot of new developers are cropping up to make games for this new platform. Until now, investors have been lining up to invest in virtual reality headset developers but with a number of headsets lined up to release next year, number of developers are cropping up for the platform.
