Studio Ghibli’s deeply moving animated film, Grave of the Fireflies, is set to stream exclusively on Netflix starting 16 September 2024. The anime will be available in over 190 countries, excluding the USA and Japan.
Based on Akiyuki Nosaka’s Naoki Prize-winning short story, Grave of the Fireflies is set in Kobe near the end of World War II and depicts the tragic fate of war orphan siblings and the horrors of this period. The film was created by the legendary director Isao Takahata (1935-2018), the co-founder of Studio Ghibli. Takahata has also directed Pom Poko (1994) and The Tale of The Princess Kaguya (2013).
Grave of the Fireflies is executive produced by Ryoichi Sato, produced by Toru Hara, written and directed by Takahata, with music by Michio Mamiya, character design and animation direction Yoshifumi Kondo, layout by Yoshiyuki Momose, art direction by Nizo Yamamoto, colour design by Michiyo Yasu, photography by Nobuo Koyama and sound design by Yasuo Uragami.
Netflix currently offers 22 Studio Ghibli films to its members worldwide (except USA and Japan), including Suzume, The First Slam Dunk and Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King.
