Starbreeze acquires rights to the ‘Payday’ franchise

Stolkholm based Starbreeze Studios has recently announced their acquisition of Payday. Originally developed by 505 Games, Payday is currently up and running with its second edition. The acquisition comes at 10.9 million B-shares at Starbreeze, which is estimated to be around $30 million.

Now, Starbreeze will have future rights to all the developments and revenues for Payday 2 and Payday’s mobile version. The press release regarding the acquisition on Starbreeze’s website read, “Starbreeze will retain full net revenue from Payday 2 on the Steam platform starting retroactively from 1 May, 2016. Revenue generated by the console game Payday 2: Crimewave Edition will continue to be split between the companies as before, and 505 Games will continue to publish the title.

Furthermore, 505 Games will retain a 33 per cent revenue share of Starbreeze’s net revenues from future sales of Payday 3 capped at 40 MUSD, and after Starbreeze has fully recouped its development and marketing costs.”

The third instalment of the game has also been announced, with the fact that 505 Games will also share the net revenue from it.  Payday 2 will still receive support for “at least another 18 months.”

Payday, a first person shooter was launched in 2011, while Payday 2 was released back in August 2013 over PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, while the current generation console version of the game was released mid-last year.

No further details about the third instalment of the game has yet been released.
