Sony unveils the new PlayStation 4 Pro and a slimmer version of PS4

While Microsoft recently unveiled its upcoming console Project Scorpio and released Xbox One S, an upgraded version of Xbox One, Sony just kicked up its PlayStation game at an event at New York yesterday. The company announced two new consoles which are to be added to the PlayStation’s kitty.

First up is the slimmer version of PS4. This new model would not be an entirely new one and would sport the same configuration like the PS4 but it would be much smaller in size.

With a price tag of $299, the console will be available “in most markets” 15 September onwards. The console has also been embellished with an upgraded version of the Dualshock 4 controller. The news of this console was not perhaps the best kept secret as images of the console had leaked earlier over an online auction site and almost every enthusiast knew about it, this was just the official reveal from the creators. This version will likely be competing against Microsoft’s Xbox One S.

PS4 Pro
Next comes the biggest announcement, perhaps for which the community has been waiting for. While Sony had confirmed the console codenamed ‘Neo’ ahead of E3 this year, now the project has been revealed and it is called PS4 ‘Pro’. The new version sports better graphics, a faster processor and the most anticipated support for 4K resolution. However, it is important to note that the new console will not be replacing the regular PS4 instead it will be running alongside the base model with all new games being playable in the old hardware. The new console will have an 8 core AMD Jaguar as the main processor and an AMD Raedon based graphics card.

It was also revealed at the event that selected PS4 titles will have better graphical specs by which PS4 Pro users will be able to experience it at the best. Some titles include Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Modern Warfare: Remastered, Battlefield 1 and FIFA 16, Mass Effect: Andromeda, Uncharted 4, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. PS4 Pro is priced at $399 and will roll out on 10 November this year.

Finally, we also know that YouTube and Netflix are also working upon new apps exclusively for PS4 Pro.
While Microsoft’s Xbox Scorpio’s configurations seem really solid, it would be interesting to see how Sony’s new PS4 Pro goes up against it as previously Sony’s PS4 almost always dominated the Xbox in terms of popularity and revenue.
