The US Federal Trade Comission (FTC) has ordered Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) to refund a $25 or $50 voucher to early buyers of PS Vita for misleading with false advertisements.
SCEA has reached an agreement with the FTC to refund settle the allegations that it misled people about the capabilities of the handheld console. Sony in an advertisement made by the advertising firm Deutsch LA claimed that Vita had Remote Play functionality with the PS3, but only a handful of games had this function. It also claimed that the Vita would be cross-platform and the players would be able to continue their game on the handheld console from their PS3 from anywhere if they are connected via internet – which was certainly not what it could do.
“Sony failed to inform consumers that to use this feature, purchasers had to buy two versions of the same game – one for their PS3 and one for the PS Vita,” the FTC’s report read.
“Deutsch LA prepared the advertising for the launch of the PS Vita and either knew or should have known that the ads were misleading,” the FTC added.
Sony has recently been in deep waters when it comes to its consoles, where recently they had to withdraw a sexist ad after a lot of flak from the public.
