Sony Animation has chosen today – which is apparently Global Smurfs Day – to announce Get Smurfy, the studio’s upcoming fully-animated Smurfs movie. Yes, there won’t be any live-action elements like a Neil Patrick Harris this time around.
Sony announced that Demi Lovato will be voicing Smurfette and she will probably be seen singing in the film as well. Rainn Wilson, who is best known for playing Dwight on The Office, will voice the evil Gargamel. Lastly, Homeland’s Mandy Patinkin will voice Papa Smurf.
Get Smurfy will be released on 31 March, 2017 and will be directed by Shrek 2’s Kelly Asbury. Jordan Kerner, who worked on the first animation/live-action The Smurfs in 2011, will produce with Hotel Transylvania’s Mary Ellen Bauder.
The new movie will be Sony’s third Smurfs outing and first since 2013’s The Smurfs 2. Although the films became global box office hits, making a combined $900 million, both didn’t go down well with the critics. Sony would be hopeful that a completely animated movie will work better.
Smurfette is the big star of the film, as she and her brothers take a journey through their Enchanted Forest to find another Smurfs village before Gargamel gets there. During the journey, they will find out the origins of the characters, who were originally created by Belgian artist Peyo.
Back on 10 June, Sony Pictures Animation also announced that a fourth Open Season film, Open Season: Scared Silly, will hit theaters in Spring 2016 and in two days a new trailer of Hotel Transylvania 2 is expected to hit the internet.
