The Sonic franchise which created numerous games with the recent Sonic the Hedgehog video game has now ventured to the big screen. Sony Pictures Entertainment and SEGA SAMMY Group have announced Sonic the Hedgehog movie scheduled for 2018.
Marza Animation Planet, the animation wing, along with Sony Pictures plans to create a CG-animated and live action hybrid film. It seems this decision of the company is with the aim to expand its business on the animation front and also enhance the imprint of the franchise among the audience across verticals.
SEGA, CEO, Hajime Satomi said, “Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid Sonic the Hedgehog movie scheduled for release in 2018. Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved.”
With the animated series of the past Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and games like Sonic Boom, Lost World and Unleashed, this film is yet another creation based on the same principle. The basic essence of the film will continue to be the world’s fastest hedgehog known for his ability to move at supersonic speed to protect his friends from their enemies.
The Sonic games have done well among kids and the animated series which premiered in 1993 also left a mark with its pack of 65 episodes. And now, with Sony Pictures coming in, this film can be expected to be a decent watch.
