Saudi Arabia weighs EA-Savvy merger to create gaming powerhouse

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) is considering combining Electronic Arts (EA) with Savvy Games Group, potentially creating one of the world’s largest gaming companies, Bloomberg reported.

The proposed merger would bring EA’s major franchises, including Madden NFL, Battlefield and The Sims, together with Savvy’s growing portfolio of gaming assets and mobile expertise. The move could give PIF a single platform for acquisitions, game development and IP expansion.

However, no final decision has been made. Bloomberg reported that any deal is unlikely before Savvy completes its US$6 billion acquisition of Chinese mobile gaming company Moonton.

The potential combination comes as Saudi Arabia continues to invest heavily in gaming under its vision 2030 diversification strategy. PIF has already committed billions to the sector, while Savvy has acquired companies including Scopely and Niantic’s games business.

A merger could also strengthen EA’s position in mobile gaming, an area where the company has faced challenges. The deal would likely face regulatory scrutiny if it moves forward.

If approved, the combination would mark another major step in Saudi Arabia’s ambition to build a global gaming powerhouse.
