The battle for the imperial throne is heating up. Red River is charging into its second cour this week, with the anime’s official website unveiling a new main trailer and visuals that tease fresh alliances, dangerous schemes and plenty of palace intrigue.
The trailer puts several key characters in the spotlight as the story moves into its next chapter, while the main visual captures a fragile connection surrounded by suspicious looks and political manoeuvring at twilight. The second cour also comes with a new musical cue, with Nana Mizuki’s Akatsuki no Hoshi previewed as the opening theme.
Based on Chie Shinohara’s Red River manga, the series was originally serialised in Shogakukan’s Shojo Comic magazine from January 1995 to June 2002. Its chapters were collected into 28 tankobon volumes, with the manga reportedly surpassing 20 million copies in circulation by 2019.
Yuri, a modern Japanese teenager who is mysteriously pulled beneath a puddle and wakes up in the Hittite Empire of the 14th century BCE. Thrown straight into a deadly fight for the throne, Yuri joins Prince Kail as they battle assassins, navigate royal conspiracies and survive a world at war. As her exploits earn her the name of the goddess Ishtar, Yuri is forced to confront a bigger question: whether to return to her old life or embrace an uncertain future.
The anime is directed by Kosuke Kobayashi at Tatsunoko Production. Yoriko Tomita handles series composition, while Kenji Fujisaki serves as character designer. The score comes from Yoshihisa Hirano known for Hunter × Hunter.
With the throne still up for grabs and conspiracies lurking around every corner, Red River’s second cour looks set to turn the political heat up another notch. The palace doors are open and trouble is already inside.
