Post Office Studios, the immersive content studio of Kulfi Collective, has teamed up with MOW Productions and Passion Picture Films to bring to life an intriguing new documentary called Caught Out: Crime. Corruption. Cricket. The Netflix film delves into the infamous match-fixing scandal that rocked the cricketing world in 1997 and how reporters broke the news, bringing to light the corruption that had infiltrated the sport.
The film’s director, Supriya Sobti Gupta, approached Post Office Studios to produce the graphics and packaging for the film. The studio was tasked with creating a title sequence that would capture the essence of the film and convey the scandalous story of how cricket, once considered a gentleman’s game, was being controlled and manipulated by external forces. In addition, the studio worked on the packaging of archival documents and created graphics to creatively depict vital information through the film.
“Post Office Studios were excellent collaborators who put great thought into the design for this project. From planning to execution, our graphics slate was completed in record time,” said MOW Productions director Supriya Sobti Gupta. “Amongst other things, we wanted a slick title sequence representative of betting and betting paraphernalia from the 90s – the team quickly worked on the brief, churned out a couple of ideas and options and we locked on the one we always wanted to see through. We’re extremely happy with what the team has delivered- elevating some really important sequences in the film.”
Speaking about the project, Post Office Studios chief creative officer Aditya Tawde said, “We were thrilled to work on a documentary that sheds light on such an important chapter in the history of cricket. Our team put in a lot of effort to create a title sequence that effectively conveyed the theme of the film and brought to life the gripping mystery and scandal. We are happy to have collaborated with MOW Productions and Passion Picture Films on this project.”
“Our main focus was to create an engaging title sequence and show graphics that complemented the narrative of the show,” said Post Office Studios creative director Prasad Kelkar. However, they faced a unique challenge as the title cards were interspersed within the intro. To overcome this, the team came up with five to six distinct visuals that effectively captured the essence of the show without relying on a single narrative. Each title card had to stand on its own while still being a cohesive part of the sequence.
“We spent a significant amount of time brainstorming different visual concepts and experimenting with various styles and techniques, and carefully considered the pacing and flow of the title sequence to ensure that it blended seamlessly with live-action scenes.” added Kelkar.
The concept note for the title sequence was to use visuals of gambling to subliminally build the association of corruption within the game of cricket. The studio creatively incorporated different elements of the gambling world to show how it dictated the cricketing world, leaving viewers with a thought-provoking and intriguing title sequence.
Caught Out: Crime. Corruption. Cricket promises to be an eye-opening experience that will take viewers on a journey through the underbelly of the cricketing world, with Post Office Studios‘ exceptional skills bringing the visuals to life.
