I’m Popeye the Sailor Man.
I’m Popeye the Sailor Man.
I’m strong to the finich,
‘Cause I eats me spinach.
I’m Popeye the Sailor Man.
Getting nostalgic, aren’t you? Yes, our very dear Popeye has turned 90 and in his honour, a new series of comic strips, series of animated shorts, merchandise and lot more are being created celebrating his majestic sail through the years.
Popeye was originally created by Elzie Crisler Segar and made its first appearance as part of the King Features strip Thimble Theatre on 17 January 1929 and later the strip’s title was changed to Popeye. The original strip that appeared as Popeye’s Cartoon Club gave readers a chance to meet Popeye. In honour of his birthday, King Features is bringing the Popeye’s Cartoon Club back. The much loved character is drawn in a comic strip by various comic artists and the strip will appear every Sunday on Comics Kingdom, throughout 2019.
The strong sailor is also getting a reboot for a series of animated shorts. The series will see Popeye as a more youthful man, who is resourceful and lives in a washed-ashore houseboat, collects rainwater and grows his own spinach. Produced by WildBrain, the two-minute short is aimed at young audience.
We are hoping to see the original supporting characters Olive Oyl, Popeye’s cute girlfriend; his adopted baby nephew, Swee’ Pea; the villian in the story, Bluto; the hamburger obsessed moocher, Wimpy, and of course Popeye’s magical pet, Jeep to relive the magic.
While the audience get to meet Popeye through animation, a comic strip by Jeffrey Brown also popped up on the internet showing a romantic take on Popeye’s relationship when Olive catches him gazing at her picture, but all he is thinking about is his other love, Spinach!
With the character’s popularity, many merchandising products are out in the market, marking the milestone achieved by Popeye. The product list is never ending and includes protein bars and nutritional supplements, clothing line, footwear brand, figurines, toys, collectibles to name a few.
With so much on the plate, hope Popeye gets to eat his Spinach.
Happy 90s Sailor Man!
