Paul Ryan, comic artist behind ‘Avengers’, ‘Fantastic Four’ and ‘The Phantom’, passes away

Paul Ryan, the American Comic artist who worked for Marvel Comics and DC Comics on a number of super-hero comics, passed away on 6 March, 2016.

paul ryanRyan’s cousin Chad Callanan expressed his grief on Facebook by saying, “Chances are you were touched by him in your lifetime as he was the cartoonist for some of the most well known and beloved characters in the world. From Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man, The Phantom to the Fantastic Four, most of which made it to the big screen and Hollywood. He was a true giant and artist, who achieved more success in his short life than any one of us would ever know in ten lifetimes. He was somebody who showed me how to dream big, but he was also my friend and that was good enough.”

Completing Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Graphic Design, Paul Ryan graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art. He began his career with Marvel Comics in 1985 by inking two issues of “The Thing” and later the “Squadron Supreme” series. His work then gained impetus as he went on to illustrate The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #21 issue wherein Peter Parker gets married to Mary Jane Watson; moving on to further ink the Avengers, Iron Man, Thor and finally the Fantastic Four.

He also worked on various DC Comics characters like “The Flash” and “Superman”. Until his death, he penciled and inked the daily comic strip The Phantom. He was 66 years old.
