Overwatch has proved itself to be one of the best gaming titles of recent times. While the developers Blizzard Entertainment did not leave any stone unturned in bringing the game to what it is now, it seems that a large number of fans are not so happy by the recent results of the supposed alternate reality game (ARG) by which the developers were teasing their upcoming playable character of the game named ‘Sombra’ whose alleged image has already been leaked a while ago.
After a series of codes and hidden messages deciphered by enthusiast, it led them to a site named ‘amomentincrime’ which had apparently been taken over by the virtual character Sombra who is rumoured to be a hacker. The website displayed a timer which moved at a very slow pace and players expected that once it comes to 100 per cent it would be the time Sombra is actually revealed. Much to their disappointment, once the timer reached its zenith over the course of around two months it displayed another few lines of message which reads:
…Estableciendo conexión…
…Protocolo Sombra v1.95 iniciado…
…Transmisión finalizada – finalizando carga…
…Carga finalizada. Unidad Bastion E-54 comprometida…
…Terminando conexión…
Translated, this message reads:
… Connecting …
… Protocol v1.95 Shadow started …
… finished Transmission – ending load …
… Charging complete. Bastion Unit E-54 committed … … Completing connection…
The new message refers in someway to ‘Bastion’, a character already playable in the game, but nothing concrete as the fans expected. This had led to quite a furore among the ones who were eagerly anticipating the new character who had been teased even before the previous character ‘Ana’ was released. A thread post on Reddit named “Blizzard please do not treat any heroes in the future like you have with Sombra,” went on with a bombardment of 3000 plus comments. The original post reads, “Let me start by saying some of the ARG stuff is cool. Like the website or small hints in game. However all this Sombra ‘hype’ has reached a point where I’m completely sick and tired of hearing about her.
Sure, I’m excited for a new hero. But at this point Sombra has become more of a meme than an actual character. And nothing they introduce with her will be able to live up to the, frankly frustrating, amount of hype she’s been given. It seems like every time we’re FINALLY going to see a release, it turns out to be yet another teaser.
I guess the short answer is I’m sick of hearing about her. And if this is how every hero is going to be treated from now on, I worry every character will be released to disappointment rather than excitement.”
The developers have till now kept mum on the issue. The new message on the aforementioned countdown website might hold a new set of clues for the upcoming character but it is clear that the fans are getting absolutely frustrated with all the waiting.
Currently, the game is hosting a Halloween event which ends on 1 November. The fans may have to wait a while longer as Blizzard will be hosting its annual expo, Blizzcon on 4 and 5 November which is known to be the hub of major announcements every year. Let’s see what Blizzard has in store for us. We will keep you updated with the latest developments.
