Nitish Mittersain steps down as Nazara managing director, gears up for his second innings

After 27 years at the helm of Nazara Technologies, Nitish Mittersain is ready to pass the baton but he is far from leaving the game. The gaming entrepreneur is transitioning from managing director to founder and non-executive director, making room for Nazara’s next chapter while preparing to back a new generation of founders.

Mittersain shared the news in a LinkedIn post, reflecting on his 27-year journey with the company, which he founded at the age of 19 after making games since he was seven.

Calling Nazara his karma bhoomi and classroom, Mittersain looked back on a journey marked by industry crashes, near-death experiences, multiple pivots and global expansion. The company went on to become India’s first publicly listed gaming company with a global footprint, turning his childhood passion into a long-running entrepreneurial innings.

The timing, he noted, feels right. Nazara is on strong footing, with its market capitalisation near its all-time high and its largest-ever acquisition recently completed. For Mittersain, the transition is less about stepping away and more about allowing the institution to grow beyond its founder.

And he is not hanging up his gaming boots just yet.

With investments in more than 120 start-ups across sectors in recent years, Mittersain plans to devote the next decade to backing exceptional founders, developing new ideas and helping build the next generation of companies from India for the world.

“To my friends in gaming: I am going nowhere. My heart belongs to this industry,” he wrote in his LinkedIn post, reassuring the sector that his next innings will still have plenty of play.

For a founder who has spent 27 years building the game, the next move is clear: less time at the crease of one company, more time helping others take their shot.
