Netflix is not done with animation yet! The streaming giant is pushing for more animated content and has assented a 10-episode order for animated comedy, Hoops.
Created by Ben Hoffman (Archer, New Girl) and executive produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie), Hoops has Jake Johnson as the lead voice cast.
The animated comedy revolves around a hot-headed, foul-mouthed high school basketball coach, Ben Hopkins, who thinks turning around his god-awful team will take him to the ‘big leagues’. Johnson will voice the lead character of coach Hopkins.
Hoffman will pen the show and also executive produce alongside Lord, Miller, Johnson and Lord Miller Productions’ Seth Cohen. Bento Box (Bob’s Burgers) will take care of the animation for the half-hour comedy. Aubrey Lee will also oversee for Lord Miller Productions.
Hoops marks Lord and Miller’s second animated TV series and the first Netflix series. The shows mark their follow-ups to Fox’s Last Man on Earth, Making History and the live-action/animated hybrid, Son of Zorn.
The duo have had success with animated features including Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and its sequel; The Lego Movie and its offshoots, The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie; as well as the upcoming Smallfoot, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part.
For Johnson, this role marks his first TV effort since Fox’s New Girl. Hoops will reunite Johnson with Lord and Miller after he voiced the lead role of Peter Parker/Spider Man in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. His credits also include Jurassic World, Neighbors and Let’s Be Cops.
Hoops also represents the latest animated sale from 20th Century Fox TV, which started with Apple’s Central Park and continued with Hulu’s Solar Opposites and Fox’s Bless the Harts. Furthermore, the animated entry The Great North is in development at Fox.
Hoops will join Netflix’s animated roster that includes Disenchantment, BoJack Horseman, Tuca and Bertie and more.
