Netflix has announced that Mexico’s Anima Estudios (Teenage Fairytale Dropouts, Top Cat: The Movie) will produce the SVOD outlet’s first animated original series to be produced in Latin America: Las Leyendas (“The Legends”). The first 13-episode season will be available for streaming in 2017.
Las Leyendas is set in the 1800s and follows a reluctant – but heroic – teenage boy named Leo San Juan, who has the ability to talk to spirits and otherworldly creatures. When his hometown vanishes into another dimension, he must team up with a group of phantasmagorical misfits to defeat Quetzalcoatl, an inter-dimensional entity bent on universal conquest.
The series is based on Anima’s trilogy of kids’ features La Leyenda de la Nahuala, La Leyenda de la Llorana and La Leyenda de los Momias and characters created by producer Ricardo Arnaiz. Ben 10 writer James Krieg is on board the series.
