Microsoft has revealed that it has managed to sell over 6.6 million Xbox consoles in the quarter ending 31 December 2014 in a statement today and posted revenues of $26.5 billion.
While revenues were up at Microsoft, net income and Xbox sales were down year-over-year. During the same period the previous year, Microsoft’s fiscal Q2, the company sold 7.4 million Xbox consoles, split between 3.9 million Xbox One consoles and 3.5 million Xbox 360 consoles. Microsoft did not offer a similar breakdown of the 6.6 million it sold from 1 October – 31 December 2014. The company’s net income was $5.8 billion.
Xbox One was the best selling console for consecutive two months starting from November and the position change was majorly due to the drop in price from $399 to $349. Sony did a 4.1 million sale of its PlayStation 4 consoles in the same holiday season. The console war is on in the US but overall the Sony console has a sizable lead.
Microsoft’s Devices and Consumer revenue – which includes Windows Phone, Surface and Bing in addition to Xbox – increased eight per cent with a total of $12.9 billion in revenue.
