Success has been brewing perfectly for the team-up of Netflix and Marvel as the 13-episoder Daredevil series starring Charlie Cox as the ‘Man without Fear’ struck the right cords with the masses. It wasn’t long before the creators of the show planned for the second season of the dark and gritty intense episodes that narrated the origin tale of Hell’s Kitchen’s vigilante, Daredevil. The hit series has reportedly roped in French actress, Elodie Yung as the Daredevil’s love interest, Elektra for Season 2.
Elodie Yung would be joining the likes of Roasario Dawson, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson and Vincent D’Onofrio, all reprising their Marvel character roles from the first season. Also new to the team-cast is The Walking Dead actor Jon Bernthal who would be taking up the mantle of ‘The Punisher’ in the forthcoming series along-side Charlie Cox as the scarlet-devil.
In the Marvel Comic Universe, Elektra was created by graphic artist Frank Miller and is a trained ninja-assassin of Greek descent wielding a pair of bladed sai. Throughout her reign in the comics she enjoys a twisted-relationship with the Hell’s Kitchen’s superhero, Daredevil as her violent nature and mercenary lifestyle lead the duo into having serious difference of opinions.
As Elodie Young dons the ninja robes, she isn’t the first one to portray Elektra on-screen. Jennifer Garner first played Elektra in 20th Century Fox’s Daredevil (2003). In spite of the movie’s failure Garner agreed to reprise her role in a solo spin-off, Elektra (2005) which too flunked at the box office.
In 2012, Marvel won back the rights of Daredevil and the characters in his shared universe from 20th Century Fox. Things have since then worked out well for the Scarlet Devil. Apart from the darker tone of the series directed by Drew Goddard, the performances by the actors too have charmed the masses, notably Charlie Cox as Daredevil a.k.a Mathew Murdock and Vincent D’onofrio as the antagonist, Wilson Fisk a.k.a. ‘The KingPin’.
Commenting on the last star-cast, Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb stated that, “After a worldwide search, we found in Elodie the perfect actress to embody both Elektra’s impressive and deadly physicality, as well as her psychological complexity.”
The season one of the hit series dropped an Easter egg for Elektra’s inclusion when in a conversation with his fellow attorney buddy, Foggy, Mathew discusses a Greek girl he once dated back in his college days and as per comics, Elektra, is the daughter of a Greek Diplomat.
Loeb also added that, “Paired with Charlie as Matt Murdock, the two will bring one of the most beloved and tumultuous comic book relationships to life with all the accompanying sparks and spectacular action sequences the show is known for.”
Elodie Yung was last seen in her kickass role in action-sequel, G.I.Joe – Retaliation (2013) as Jinx. Her other on-going projects include a TV series, Of Kings and Prophets and also in an upcoming fantasy-flick, Gods of Egypt along-side Gerard Butler.
The series returns with the second season in November 2016 weaving more Marvel characters into the MCU.
