DC Comics has long been planning to shut shop in New York and head for the coast. After years of planning, DC Comics finally bids farewell to New York in a move to join the rest of the DC Entertainment family in sunny Burbank, California in 2015. On 10 April, DC bid a heartfelt goodbye to its fans in New York on Twitter, stating “Thanks, NYC, for being part of DC Comics’ history for so many years. And special thanks to everyone who’s worked here over those years.
Surprisingly and genuinely the first to reply to the tweet was DC‘s biggest rival, Marvel Entertainment. Marvel tweeted an emotional gif image of Groot wiping away a tear from Rocket Raccoon’s eye, a still from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy universe. Although the classic-heated debate of Marvel v/s DC has split the fans across the globe, the two comic publishers share a long sweet and sour comic-rivalry jogging back to the first half of the 20th Century.

DC’s relocating plans had begun back in 2010, since DC restructured its executive leadership in 2010 in favour of California-based chief creative officer Geoff Johns and co-publishers Jim Lee and Dan DiDio. In 2013 an internal email from DC Entertainment prez Diane Nelson to NYC staffers confirmed that the relocation was scheduled for 2015 and that everyone on the New York staff will be offered an opportunity to join their Burbank colleagues.
Reportedly the relocation was scheduled as a move to allow DCE to bring all its divisions under one roof, which should in turn allow for a more integrated use of intellectual properties across platforms. Investors may see this as a lucrative decision as in the long run it would result in better content for consumers, the exodus of a storied New York institution is a sad milestone for New Yorkers.
