Marvel has given a go-ahead for The Eternals, a tale of cosmic beings created by Jack Kirby in the 1970s and has roped in Chinese filmmaker, Chloé Zhao as the director. (as The Hollywood Reporter reported)
Known for working on indie projects, Zhao’s placement will mark the first time that a woman of colour is going to helm a film for the superhero studio, usually dominated by white men. In general, this marks a shift for Marvel, which has appointed a woman to direct Black Widow, and it will finally get its first woman-led superhero movie with 2019’s Captain Marvel, played by Brie Larson. Zhao’s filmography includes movies such as Songs My Brothers Taught Me, The Rider, which was nominated for a number of indie awards.
Matthew and Ryan Firpo of Ruin fame that topped the 2017 Black List, is penning the script for the superhero team adventure. The project features the super-powered and near-immortal beings known as Eternals and a more monstrous rival known as the Deviants that were created by cosmic beings known as Celestials. Eternals can use their talents and advanced technology to protect humanity. With Avengers 4 slated to hit the screens next year, the studio is looking ahead to what comes next for the franchise.
Earlier this year, Marvel Studio head Kevin Feige hinted that The Eternals was “one of many many many things that we are actively beginning to have creative discussions about,” when it came to the post-Avengers phase of the franchise.
Seems like Marvel fans are going to witness some huge treat in the coming years!
