It’s a fact that a large chunk of the traffic received from broadcasters are from kids and understanding them has never been easy. To unravel the preferences of these young people was “What Kids Love: A Superfast Binge Session” at MIPJunior 2016.
Hosted by Eurodata TV Worldwide, the session revolved around the preferences of kids and which shows are topping in those genres. Here’s a brief about the session:
Animation remains the most universal and beloved way to tell kids stories. In this session, we’ll run through the highest-rated successes from around the world. Look past the international brands who’ve already made it, and discover the best performing local shows for kids in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Which will go global?
The session took off with the speakers Sahar Baghery and Avril Blondlot of Eurodata TV Worldwide telling about the broad categories which are indulged by kids: learn, explore and dream.
Kids love nature and as observed by the success of Octonauts, show related to nature work the best. Nelly and Nora is the 2nd best performing show in the UK, Masha Tales which is a Russian production is the 4th best show in this category famous in Italy. Not just animation content, live-action shows also work like Moy Muzery.
Along with this, exploration in the science genre goes well and shows topping the category are Blaze and the Monster Machine, Los Creadores, Superberin.
Next comes in the explore category in which mysteries, crime solving and imparting learning lessons shows work well as kids love solving mysterious and challenges. Super Wings is one of the best examples as it’s a favourite in Canada, Italy and Spain. Shows like PJ Masks and Miraculous Ladybug tend to attract kids as they showcase challenges which are being solved by superhero powers.
Kids imagination has no boundaries. They love dreaming and escaping reality and venture into magical world; example being Pokemon, Yo-kai Watch wherein parallel world content is observed. A blend of live-action with animation, animation and live-action also work here. This variety could be observed from the shows like Jamillah and Aladdin which is purely live-action and Seven and Me which is hybrid animation. Both these shows allow the kids to live their favourite tales again.
And finally, it’s all about having fun – be it with toys on TV (Paw Patrol, Skylanders Academy which is by Activisation Blizzard), or embarking on crazy stories (Kung Food, Family Rysberg), or with slapstick comedies (Larva, Grizzy and Lemmings).
