Animated film The First Slam Dunk that topped the Japanese box office in 2023, will soon be available to stream on Netflix in 75 countries from 25 August. In Japan, the animated film started streaming exclusively on Netflix on 10 June.
Bringing The First Slam Dunk to the service is part of Netflix’s ongoing efforts to expand its extensive anime library. This addition joins other acclaimed titles like Suzume and Studio Ghibli Films, providing a broader audience with the opportunity to discover best-in-class anime from Japan.
Written and created by Takehiko Inoue, Slam Dunk is a beloved manga about a high school basketball team which was serialised from 1990-96. The original manga is one of the best-selling series of all time, with over 170 million copies sold globally, and has been adapted to various media and video games, including a hit anime series that ran from 1993-96.
The film The First Slam Dunk written and directed by Inoue himself depicts the last game that has never been animated before. The blockbuster hit has won many awards, including the Japan Academy Prize for Anime, and has received an overwhelmingly positive response mainly in Asia.
