‘How To Train Your Dragon’ director reveals plot of final installment

DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon 2 has a strong chance to bag the Best Animated Feature Oscar to its already huge commercial success. The film has already brought in $618 million worldwide and honoured with a Golden Globe in the past month.

Recently, the film’s director Dean DeBlois spoke to Collider about the third and most likely final film in the series which is in the works and is currently targeting a June 2018 release.

DeBlois confirmed that the third film will end where the books begin, with Hiccup potentially parting ways with his beloved dragon Toothless and he himself growing up into a man.

“Dragon 3 is the culmination of Hiccup’s coming of age. Both he and Toothless are now chiefs of their respective tribes, and it’s a dueling story where you have both characters trying to do what’s right for their kind and an eventual outcome where Hiccup is able to stand on his own. We’re gonna take the story to where the books begin, which is Hiccup as an adult reflecting back on a time where there were dragons, suggesting that the dragons will in some way go away. Why and could they come back and the mystery of what all that is will be saved for the actual story,” he revealed.

Debris also said that fans will learn much more about Drago (Djimon Hounsou) in the upcoming sequel. The filmmaker said that he is also hard at work on the script with around sixty pages of it completed so far.

“You have to wait until the third film to actually see where Drago’s character goes. He’s a lot more complex than he’s presented in this second installment. There were a few months of pitching outlines and making sure that everybody was content with where it was headed, and now I’m deep into the script. I’m about halfway through. I have to hand it off pretty soon,” he added.

Returning for the third feature will be Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera and Cate Blanchett.
