The seven part fantasy novel series that became one of the highest grossing film franchise, Harry Potter will now be getting a play series which will be based on Harry’s youngest son. The play is called Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and it’s bought by the hit series author JK Rowling with writer Jack Thorne and director John Tiffany.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, one of the West End’s most eagerly anticipated shows of 2016, is to be presented in two parts. The play’s two parts are intended to be seen either in order on the same day (at matinee and evening performances) or on two consecutive evenings. The play is in two parts, due to the ‘epic nature of the story’.
Olivier and Tony award-winner John Tiffany, said: “I’ve never worked on anything quite like this before. Usually in theatre you’re adapting existing material or creating an entirely new play. With the Cursed Child we have been given the unique opportunity to explore some of the most cherished books and beloved characters ever written, yet work with JK Rowling to tell a story from that world that no one yet knows – it’s exhilarating.”
The play is going to be a sequel to Rowling’s books, and will be focused on Harry’s youngest son, Albus Severus. The official synopsis reads, “While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.”
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child comes to London’s West End summer 2016 and will feature a cast of over 30 actors who will be announced later.
