Gyrus AI leverages contextual intelligence to transform media search and virtual product placement

With Semantic Media Search and Virtual Product Placement, Gyrus AI is helping broadcasters, sports organisations and post-production companies unlock greater value from media archives while exploring smarter, context-driven advertising opportunities.

As media organisations accumulate vast volumes of audio, video and image content, finding specific moments within these archives remains a time-consuming process. Bengaluru-based Gyrus AI is addressing this challenge through artificial intelligence-powered solutions that understand media context, reducing the need for traditional manual tagging.

At the Broadcast India Show, Gyrus AI global sales director Ganesh Kapde, accompanied by Gyrus AI’s lead AI engineer and a key technical contributor Sachin P R, showcased two offerings: Semantic Media Search and Virtual Product Placement.

Making media archives searchable through AI

Traditionally, media professionals have relied on manually tagging images and videos to identify people, activities, objects and locations. Gyrus AI’s Semantic Media Search automates this process by analysing video frames and extracting contextual information that users can subsequently retrieve through natural-language searches.

“The AI now understands like a human. It scans the video, understands each and every frame, and grabs that information where manual tagging is not needed,” Kapde explained.

The platform allows users to search for visual moments without knowing the original file name or manually assigned metadata. Illustrating this, Kapde said, “If I say that I’m searching for some person who’s standing and just opening his arms in one of the movies, I would get someone like Shah Rukh Khan who’s opening his arm.”

The technology also offers flexibility for identifying lesser-known individuals. In sports archives, users can upload reference images, assign names to players and search for specific actions involving them. This could help broadcasters retrieve footage of emerging athletes who may be recognised locally but are not yet familiar to global audiences.

From metadata to knowledge graphs

Another feature introduced by Gyrus AI is its Knowledge Graph, which connects information across extensive media archives. For instance, a broadcaster looking to compile Rohit Sharma’s best sixes across IPL seasons would traditionally have to review hours of match footage.

With the platform, the search can be as simple as asking for ‘Rohit Sharma hitting a six’. “Because we have scanned all those videos, we get that information immediately, present it, and the user can start using it,” Kapde said.

The company is also exploring AI-led video summarisation and automated trailer creation, which could analyse a feature-length film, identify significant moments and assemble selected shots into a shorter video.

Context-aware virtual product placement

Gyrus AI’s second offering, Virtual Product Placement, focuses on making advertising more relevant to the content being viewed. Rather than inserting advertisements without considering the surrounding narrative, the technology analyses the scene and identifies suitable opportunities for brand integration.

Kapde illustrated this through a conversation about drinking water. If a video discusses the benefits of hydration, the system could identify an appropriate opportunity for a water brand such as Bisleri or Kinley, rather than placing an advertisement for a cold drink that contradicts the conversation.

The platform can also identify suitable locations for digitally integrating products into a scene, including three-dimensional placements on objects such as tables.

Subscription model and industry response

Gyrus AI follows a yearly subscription model, with pricing based on the number of hours of footage indexed by the platform. “What we charge is on the hours of footage which we have indexed,” Kapde explained.

The company has received encouraging interest from broadcasters, sports organisations, news companies and large post-production studios managing substantial media libraries.

Trade shows remain an important part of its outreach strategy. Having participated in Nab and IBC, Gyrus AI has also been showcasing its solutions at Broadcast India and plans to expand its presence across Asian and Dubai trade events.

By combining contextual media discovery with intelligent advertising placement, Gyrus AI is looking to address two growing industry requirements: making large content libraries easier to navigate and creating new opportunities to monetise existing footage.
