Fifth ‘Pirates’ Film readies to set sail; VFX to be delivered by ILM

Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer Films have commenced production for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales on location in Australia. The fifth film in the $3.7 billion-grossing franchise that is inspired by the classic Disney theme park attraction is being captained by Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rřnning (Kon-Tiki). Filming will take place entirely at Village Roadshow Studios and locations around Queensland.

Johnny Depp reprises his legendary role as Captain Jack Sparrow, who in this outing finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazer (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.

The sequel also features returning cast members Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa, Kevin R. McNally and Stephen Graham, and newcomers Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner), Brenton Thwaites (Maleficent) and Golshifteh Farahani (The Patience Stone).

The script was penned by Jeff Nathanson (Catch Me If You CanIndiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull). The effects team is headed by VFX supervisor Gary Brozenich (The Lone Ranger), SFX production consultant John Frazier and SFX supervisor Dan Oliver (Mad Max: Fury Road).
