FICCI FRAMES 2015 gives more impetus to Animation, VFX and Gaming

The theme of the 16th Edition of FICCI FRAMES is ‘Making India the Global Entertainment Superpower’ and in line with that though the organising committee has formulated a stellar line-up of sessions focused on the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics (AVGC) sectors.

Speaking to AnimationXpress.com in an earlier interaction FICCI AVGC forum Chairman, Ashish Kulkarni had mentioned about there being a lot of focus on kids’ programming on national broadcasters, along with introduction of ‘Frame Your Idea – Game Hack’ along with Reliance Games.

There are some interesting sessions that are more tuned towards addressing some key areas in the AVGC sectors at FICCI FRAMES this time around. A few of them include: Decoding kids’ content consumption, AVGC India 2020, Emerging alternate revenue sources for kids’ content, Technological Edge: The future of making movies, Gaming Study and Super Pitch – Best Gaming Idea.

Reliance Entertainment - Digital, CEO Manish Agarwal

AnimationXpress.com caught up with Reliance Entertainment – Digital, CEO Manish Agarwal to get his side of the story on partnering with FICCI FRAMES to lead the gaming vertical along with Ashish Kulkarni. “It’s a symbiotic relationship; FICCI hasn’t had a strong gaming front, but has been doing a fabulous job with the animation and visual effects verticals,” says Manish. “When I spoke to Ashish, I said I have been coming and doing gaming sessions for the past three years now but there is more to gaming than just having mundane discussions and sessions. Hence, we have chalked out a plan for giving gaming its due at FICCI and Ashish has been generous enough to let me lead things.”

This edition of the FRAMES will also see the introduction of the ‘Frame Your Idea’ track, which aims to provide a platform to idea owners to come and meet studios, producers and potential commissioners and publishers of their idea and explore long term businesses and build intellectual properties.

So people having any idea around feature films, TV series, live action or animation for kids’ content, comic book creations, gaming ideas or documentary ideas, can simply register for FICCI FRAMES and look at building on their intellectual properties (IPs).

The companies that will be attending FICCI for this particular track include: Dharma Productions, Disney India Studios, ROMP Pictures, Excel Entertainment, Sikhya Entertainment and Phantom Films for those wanting to pitch their ideas on films. This will take place on 25 March. The next day will be for animation and kids content, which will see broadcasters like: Cartoon Network, Pogo, Nickelodeon, Sonic, Disney India, Zee Q and Discovery Kids coming to scout for the right content along with gaming biggies like Reliance Games and Nazara. And the final day will see teams from Star Plus, Zee TV, Life OK and Channel V coming down to look for like-minded IP creators or owners.

Sharing his views on the Game Hack, Manish adds: “The 20 teams from the various Game Hacks will be given a chance to showcase their games to a large audience at FRAMES 2015, and there is also a special prize for a few at the BAF Awards, what more can these youngsters ask for.”

Centroid Studio, CEO, Phil Stilgoe

Further on the gaming front there would be a couple of case studies by Rovio on showing how one small bird game has gone onto create such a big splash on the global stage, from being licensed as TV shows, animated videos and soon going onto the big screen. This apart there will be a team from Octro that will discuss how a simple Indian game of Rummy has hit it big with not just the domestic audience but also travelled the globe and done really well for itself.

There is also going to be a special session that will be taken by Centroid Studio CEO Phil Stilgoe, who will speak about the optimum use of motion capture technology in feature films and share a few interesting case studies from the projects his studio has worked on.
