Epic Games has announced via the Fortnite Competitive Twitter account that the World Cup, which was set for July, will no longer take place. The announcement, which laid out the road map for the game’s esports aspects, noted that the World Cup’s cross-regional aspect made them unable to transition the game to an online capacity and that as a result it will no longer take place.

According to Essentially Sports latest report, the reason behind the decision is the coronavirus pandemic, which continues to spread across the world. Many sporting and esports events have been canceled or postponed indefinitely. These include events like E3, TwitchCon and more. Many esports tournaments like Dota 2 International, Apex Legends Global Series, League of Legends Championship Series, and many more have also already been canceled. Now, The Fortnite World Cup 2020 is the latest gaming competition added to the canceled events’ list.
Epic Games announced the development in a series of tweets. “Due to the limitations of cross-region online competition, there will not be a Fortnite World Cup in 2020,” the developer stated. Server lags and connection issues are some of the problems that can spoil a real-time online game of Fortnite when featuring many different regions. Since Epic’s biggest worldwide gaming event could not be held at a single physical location, they canceled it. No location or date for the World Cup was announced earlier, but it was reportedly scheduled for July 2020.
