We have seen LEGOs, Smurfs, Monsters possibly every imaginary and inanimate characters on the movie screen but what we might have never expected to see on the big screen are emojis, which are now getting their very own feature courtesy Sony Pictures Animation.
Yes, you read it right. Sony Pictures Animation is producing a movie based solely on emojis, the widely used spherical faces depicting various emotions. According to media reports, in a deal of somewhere near the seven figures mark, Sony won the bidding against Paramount and Warner Bros for this animated IP.
Emojis (pictogram), which originated in Japan, are widely used across various social media platforms and application nowadays. This project attracted many studios as emojis are pop-culture icons and something that people can’t do without.
Everyone has used emoji in some or the other way to convey their feeling or message. It would be interesting to watch how are they used in movies: will they be seen as huge characters like the Pac-Man in Sony’s upcoming Pixels or will they be attached to some figures or will the characters be having roles like the Smurfs? All we know is that the movie is going to be co-written by Eric Siegel and Anthony Leondis, with the latter also taking the director’s chair in this one.
