Based on American engineer Ray Dolby’s vision for spectacular entertainment, 50 years ago Dolby Laboratories brought about a change in the perception of sight and sound on screen.
As the company celebrates its achievements, it is also planning its growth ahead for the future. To support growth, Dolby will be moving to new headquarters at 1275 Market Street in San Francisco where it will continue to shape the sight and sound of entertainment and communications with new technologies like Dolby Cinema, Dolby Vision, Dolby Voice and Dolby Atmos.
One of the company’s latest achievements is the launch of Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime in association with AMC Theatres. Dolby aims to further expand that and Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime will be launched in up to 100 sites by 2024, including major cities like San Francisco, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Miami, Boston, Denver and Seattle.
In addition, Dolby Vision is also revolutionising displays from movie theatres to TVs. Disney’s ‘Tomorrowland’ and Disney Pixar’s ‘Inside Out’ will be the first Dolby Vision titles. Moreover, the first TVs with Dolby Vision are arriving this year from Vizio.
Dolby Atmos, the company’s other technology, is rapidly becoming the sound format of choice for filmmakers and device makers. With Atmos sound can be placed and moved anywhere in the room, including overhead, to bring entertainment around the audience alive. Over 1,000 screens worldwide have installed or committed to be equipped with Dolby Atmos, and over 275 Dolby Atmos titles have been announced globally. Entertainment enthusiasts can also enjoy Dolby Atmos in their home theatres, mobile devices and in virtual reality experiences from Jaunt.
How Dolby began its journey in 1965 Dolby’s story began in 1965 with the invention of Dolby noise reduction, a breakthrough system, which eliminated the hiss that plagued tape recordings. The company went on to transform cinema and introduced immersive sound to change the way movies were made and enjoyed. In fact, Dolby sound helped bring ‘Star Wars’ to life in 1977 and created an entire industry devoted to the audio experience. The company has won multiple awards for its contributions to entertainment, including Oscars, Emmys and Grammys.
