Dolby Laboratories recently earned a 2015 Red Dot Award for Dolby Cinema and a 2015 Red Dot Honourable Mention for the Dolby Conference Phone, both for outstanding product design.
Since 1954, the Red Dot competitions have been among the most renowned international product design competitions, with annual awards selected by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Germany, known worldwide as a “qualification and communication centre for industry, politics, and society.”
Dolby Cinema Wins 2015 Red Dot Design Award
Combining powerful image and sound technologies with inspired design, Dolby Cinema makes every visit to the movies a completely captivating event. Known for its signature entrance with a dynamic audiovisual pathway, Dolby Cinema was created to set a mood and draw moviegoers deeper into the story. The internal Dolby design team partnered with design agency Eight Inc. over a two-year period to develop several design concepts for what is now Dolby Cinema.
The Red Dot is the prize for high design quality. The international jury is a think tank for contemporary international design. Fashion designer Jimmy Choo, car designer Ken Okuyama, and the Swedish product designer Hans Ehrich are among the 40 judges of the Red Dot Award 2015. The jury awards this sought-after seal of quality only to projects whose excellent design sets them apart significantly from comparable projects.
Dolby Conference Phone Wins 2015 Red Dot Honourable Mention Design Award
The simple and elegant design of the Dolby Conference Phone brings a modern look to meeting rooms while delivering stunning audio quality. Its touch-screen user interface makes it easy to connect to and manage meetings. Dolby developed the phone by working alongside global product strategy and design firm frog.
Red Dot jurors award the honourable mention for a particularly well-executed aspect of design work, one that impresses the jury with its well-thought-out, detailed solution.
“Our teams are honored to celebrate these awards, and we appreciate the recognition from Red Dot,” said Dolby Laboratories VP & ECD Vince Voron. “We pride ourselves on naturally integrating Dolby’s stunning sound and stellar imaging technologies into our designs, creating experiential, intuitive, and functional products.”
The winners of this year’s Red Dot Awards will be recognised in Essen, Germany, at the Red Dot Gala and Designers’ Night on 29 June, 2015.
The award-winning products from the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015 will also be presented in the Red Dot Museum – a special exhibition where visitors get hands-on time with the winning products. This year’s Red Dot Museum houses the largest exhibition of contemporary design worldwide, with approximately 2,000 exhibits spread over an area of more than 4,000 square meters (more than 43,055 square feet).
Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO, Red Dot Award, said: “For 60 years, the most-respected design experts have been convening every year in Essen to seek out the best designs. This year, we had a record number of almost 5,000 entries – a huge amount of work for our jury members, who assessed each individual product, and a special value of the distinction due to the high standard. The laureates of the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015 have demonstrated exceptionally high achievements and have thus been deservedly successful in the world’s largest design competition.”
