Even before the release of Suicide Squad, there were already talks of an all female villain female line-up movie thanks to the close accomplice and lover to Joker, Harley Quinn played by Margot Robbie. Now, it’s finally out that the rumoured DC film will be “Gotham City Sirens”.
Reported by THR, David Ayer who directed Warner Bros.’ badass antihero ensemble comic book movie Suicide Squad, will be helming Gotham City Sirens. As rumoured earlier, it will host the top female villains from the DC universe.
Ayer will direct and produce the project with Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn – who recently came in the limelight thanks to Suicide Squad. Robbie is also executive producing it.
Gotham City Sirens was the name of a comic book series that starred Harley, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy (Harley’s girlfriend).
Robbie was recently named IMDb’s biggest star of the year, and won a Critics Choice Award for Harley Quinn part. Both Catwoman and Poison Ivy have appeared in previous film incarnations. Catwoman has been seen in three films – Batman Returns (Michelle Pfeiffer), Catwoman (Halle Berry), The Dark Knight Rises (Anne Hathaway) whereas Poison Ivy played with Uma Thurman was observed in Batman and Robin.
Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who also wrote scripts for the Tomb Raider remake and Warners’ Sherlock Holmes 3, is writing the screenplay.
With Suicide Squad doing well at the box-office, a sequel to it is under development. Along with that the studio plans to do a spin-off featuring Deadshot, the assassin character played by Will Smith.
As for Sirens, no release date has been announced yet. For now The Lego Batman Movie, Wonder Woman and Justice League will hit the theatres next year.
